Kashgar, the westernmost city in China, is one of the national historical and cultural cities. It is located in the Kashgar region in the southwest of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, at the junction of the Pamir Plateau and the Tarim Basin. Kashgar has been the largest city in southern Xinjiang for centuries, and is the political, economic, cultural, transportation and military center of the region south of the Tianshan Mountains. Kashgar is also a city of great importance in the Central Asian region.
