The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago and the southernmost autonomous region of Spain, located in the Atlantic Ocean, 100 km west of Morocco. The archipelago is also one of the outlying areas of the European Union Special Area. The Canary Islands are also one of the eight areas recognized by the Spanish government as having the status of a 'historic nation'. Like the two other Spanish municipalities of Ceuta and Melilla, which are located on the African continent, the Canary Islands are on the African continent.
